Monday mahjong night in Houston finally has a standing address. Every Monday at Simone on Sunset, the tables go out at 6 PM and stay out until we close. No sign-up, no season, no waiting to see if it’s happening this week. It’s happening this week.

Honestly? Because Monday needed the help.
But it works better than we expected. The room is calmer than a Friday, which matters when you’re trying to read a wall of tiles. Conversation actually carries. And happy hour runs until 10 on Mondays — house wine, $1.50 oysters, premium well drinks — so the first four hours of the night are also the cheapest ones. New to the Game? Monday Is the Easiest Night to Start
You will not be the only person learning. That’s the honest truth of a weekly game — there’s always somebody three weeks in who was completely lost on night one and is now explaining the rules to somebody else.
The basic loop is simple. Draw a tile, discard a tile, build sets and pairs faster than the other three. If you’ve ever played rummy, you’re most of the way there. The rest you pick up by watching, and mahjong players are notoriously incapable of letting a beginner struggle in silence. Someone will start coaching you. You didn’t ask. It’s fine.
Weekly matters here in a way one-off game nights don’t. Mahjong takes a couple of sessions before it clicks, and a standing Monday means you get those sessions without hunting for the next event.
What Shows Up on the Table
Food you can eat one-handed, mostly, because the other hand is busy.
Hummus and pita disappears fast. Same with the samosas. A margherita pizza covers a whole table if nobody wants to commit to their own plate. Drink-wise it splits between people treating this like a proper night out and people who remembered it’s a Monday — espresso martinis in one camp, a spritz or a glass of white in the other. Both are correct.

Bring them. A standing weekly game is exactly the kind of thing a group can build a routine around, and we’ve got the lounge, the private room, and the patio depending on how many of you there are and how loud you plan to be.

What time does mahjong night start?
6 PM every Monday. It runs until close, and people filter in the whole time — arriving at 8:30 is completely normal.
Do I need to reserve a table?
Not for a group of four. If you’re bringing more than that, call ahead so we can set up the space properly.
Is there a cover?
Give us a call before you come if you want to confirm details for your group — easiest way to get a straight answer for your specific plan.
Can I come alone?
Yes, and people do. Tell whoever’s working that you’re there for mahjong and we’ll get you introduced.
What if I’ve never played?
Then Monday is the night to fix that. Come early-ish, around 6 or 7, when tables are still forming and there’s more patience for teaching.
Where do I park?
Rice Village parking, same as any night. Street spots and nearby lots — it’s usually easier on a Monday than a weekend.
